An interview with our MPDC 27.02 winner - beatnik bobby!

Hello and congratulations on your win, beatnik bobby!

1.     Could you please introduce yourself?

I’m 33 and from Sweden

2.     What is your identity as a wizard? (Colors and archetypes you prefer, favourite cards and formats)

Blue is definitely my favorite color. Then black, white, green and red, in that order. My first (and only) real life deck was a blue counter-bounce deck from the Urza era. Ever since then I’ve had soft spot for control archetypes.

3.     How did you start playing Magic? MTGO? Standard Pauper?

I started playing back during Urza and played for like 6 months. Then I moved away from my gaming group and never picked it up again until 2006 when I looked for a cheaper alternative to online poker. I picked up MTGO and realized that being average at Magic was a lot more expensive than being bad at poker. Leagues gave me bang for my bucks though. When WotC closed those down I discovered pauper and haven’t looked back since.

4.     For the time being I (MundisV) know you have been playing Bant , why did you love it so much?

Solely for the green hexproof creatures. The other two colors had the best support cards at the time. I just love creatures with hexproof and try to play those whenever they are available.

5.     What led you to play UB Devotion deck you won with?

I wanted to play a control deck with hexproof in it since celestial flare and devour flesh have rotated. Since I played a similar deck in “M-core” league I decided to do another U/B deck.

6.     Would you play that deck again in a tournament? If no, why?

Ah, probably not. I wanted to build something out of Benthic giant and picked black because of removal, disruption and Gary. My deck had an extremely weak early game and I was lucky to hit my land drops as fast as I did. I’m thinking U/W would maybe be a better color combination because of the earlier defensive drops and superior removal (Pie_Master in the semi played a deck like that).

7.     Could you explain some of the more interesting choices in your decklist? Like Benthic Giant, Black Cat, Festergloom.

Ah, Benthic giant because of the hexproof (Of course). Black cat as an early blocker to deter aggro decks but I would definitely cut that in favor of something with deathtouch. Festergloom is a given in any black decks SB. It’s kryptonite to some of the more troublesome decks that rely on early aggression like rdw.

8.     Did you find Treasure Cruise unnecessary for your deck? It seems like a strong card for any blue deck.

Haha, my bulk bot doesn’t have it stocked yet. That’s why it didn’t make the cut. It’s an excellent card which every blue deck should have at least one of.

9.  A short recap of the tournament? (Match-ups, opponents, interesting situations)

Uhm, I have a really short memory. I can’t give a recap of game 1, 2, 3 or 5 since I can’t remember those games. However, I do remember my top 8 match against Pie_Master. He also had a deck which concentrated on winning the late game with hexproof creatures. He played U/W though and used not only Benthic Giant but also the new prowess equipped Whirlwind Adept. I actually liked his W/U better than my own B/U. None of us could handle an opposing hexproof creature buffed with enchantments so winning came down to who could assemble their monster first. Since he played white he had access to enchantment hate so I felt he had an edge over me and I was lucky to win that game. The final was against hero1141’s green stomp deck. It’s an extremely explosive deck that can win turn 3 or 4. I was extremely lucky with my land drops and managed to draw pretty much all my removal which saved me against a deck I would normally lose against. For example, the second game my starting hand included 3 of my 4 Pharika’s Cure which is just ridiculously lucky.

10.  Which Top 8 deck did you like the most?

I liked Hero1141’s monogreen Stomp deck. It’s always nice to see decks that aren’t played that often.

11.  What do you consider to be the best archetypes at the moment?

Ohh, that’s a tough question this early in the season. Last season’s MBC has lost a lot of removal without getting much in return but its core, devotion, is still untouched so it will probably be played a lot.

Various agro decks though are probably the best decks right now. A lot of removal and other control elements (such as saruli gatekeeper, essence shatter) have disappeared while all the aggressive heroic creatures from theros remain.

12.    What is your strategy against these top decks? A short sideboarding guide maybe?

Uhm, since todays decks are so creature based I’d use a lot of removal. I’d say that white probably has the best removal right now. They are all conditional though so they might be SB-material instead of main deck material. Any color (Black and red) that has sweepers should include those in their SB as well.

13.   Do you belong to Standard Pauper Players clan? (If no, why?) What benefits do you feel from being in the clan?

Yes, our clan! Ah, unfortunately clans aren’t a big feature at MTGO at present. It’s nice to see what members are online but it’s not that much of a difference. However, I like all the side activity that members of our clan generate such as our clan website where this interview will be posted (I really enjoy reading other people’s analysis)

14.   Is there anything else intriguing you in Khans? A deck you haven’t had a chance to play yet?

I haven’t explored morph yet. Morph is a lot of fun even though the creatures so far have been a little lackluster on pauper level.

15.  How did your testing post-KTK go? Where did you practice? What deck did you see/wanted to play against?

I haven’t had time to test that much. I played a couple of games in the “just for fun room” and went 3-2 with a deck that I thought would kick ass, W/G aggro. I got disappointed and went back to my roots, a control deck with hexproof. I would like to play against any new weird deck that uses the new mechanics.

16. Do you have any tips for a new Standard Pauper player trying to Top 8 his first tournament?

Look at last week’s top 8 and try to figure out a deck that could beat those decks.

17. Shoutouts?

A shoutout to all the other guys that make standard pauper what it is. Mygalaxy, rremedio, drchris, adner, carnuz, piggybot, bigbee, mundisv and all the rest that make it fun to play every Monday and Sunday.

I especially want to thank gwyned for his hosting this last year.

Thank you, beatnik bobby!

A Brand New Metagame and Three weeks away !

Feed the Clan
BBQ with mates, what else??

Khans of Tarkir is now here.

There have been plenty of reviews for the new set, bringing us all a bit of fresh air to breathe into since old format staples are now behind us.

At least speaking for Ethereal Armor, Heliod's Pilgrim now feels so lonely with less interesting Auras to fetch.

I've been testing the new metagame for 2 or 3 days, sticking to commons from Standard Pauper only, and I now have a clear idea of what I will be playing when I'm back. See below.

That won't be before the second week of November.
Most archetypes will be showing up then, maybe some players will eventually have the meta broken already, who knows?

On my side, I'll only try and feed the clan with good vibrations, because I'm flying away once more, in search of a nice place to stay, very far away from the computer and MTGO worlds.

Here's my choice, feel free to playtest it if you like. Yes, good old B/U Control list.

There's a Golgari list also coming for the win, using most Black cards from this list too, figure it out before it crushes you !

See you all in november, have fun until then.

An interview with MPDC WORLDS 26 winner - MyGalaxy!

Yet another tournament and yet another winner! Sincere congratulations to our dedicated community member MyGalaxy! Without further ado, let's move on to the interview.

Could you please introduce yourself?
My real name is Andrej. I am 31 years old, married, live in Germany and work at a finance data vendor.

What is your identity as a wizard? J (Colors and archetypes you prefer, favourite cards and formats)
I think it is Bant (BGU) and Simic (GU). But I play pretty much any color.  I also like RDW a lot.
Earlier I preferred monocolored decks, but under the influence of Chip I started to play 3-colors.
I don’t like BU, it reminds me of flicker and mill (Editor: Guess what I played, while these archetypes were available ;)).

How did you start playing Magic? MTGO? Standard Pauper?
I knew about magic since school years. 3 years ago I discovered Duel of the Planeswalkers and was wondering if there is a possibility to play with a human opponent online. And this how I found MTGO. Joekewwl introduced me to the STD Pauper format. I am very thankful for this.

What led you to playing the deck you won with?

I wanted to find an answer to WW with enchants. So I moved into GW colors. With the introduction of Invasive Species i could bounce lands, Phonetic Prism ( I primarly wanted to bounce this artifact, because I find it somehow cool:D) and creatures. To ger some power in the air I added raptors. Blue brought negates vs mill decks and more bounce with Peel from reality.
In the process of testing, I noticed, that bouncing are not enough and it would be good to kill some creatures, so I added black gatekeepers and Duress.

Would you play that deck again in a tournament? If no, why?
No, because almost everything from it rotated.

Could you explain some of the more interesting choices in your decklist?
Everything there is pretty much logical. I have lifegain, remove in form of -2/-2, bouncing, ench hate. In the last 2 events I added Zephyr Charge. It is 1U enchantment which gives a creature flying for 1U. It is not a very good card, but it helped to win 3 games (and matches with it) when the table was stalled.

A short recap of the tournament?
The event was good as always. Strange, that we had so few players. 2 weeks ago we had 20+ players and now to Worlds with a bigger prize pool I expected about 30 players.
I had 2 very had matches vs Mill. I sided whips and Dispels out for this event, so it was only Negate and Duress after SB, which could help. But I was really lucky this day. Muzac didn’t draw any remove/counter/GY lifegain in G1 and I won 2-1.
The hardest was to win vs Garth_Edu in top 8. I really thought I am going to lose. In the second game I played 75 cards and just passed 19 turns when we had 19 and 30 cards in our libraries. So I kinda milled him really slow:D

What do you consider to be the best archetypes at the moment?
My deckJ It can beat everything (except very fast RDW maybe). And BW Enchants is tough, but doable.

What is your strategy against these top decks?
Exile/destroy Aetherial armor and we are done here.

Do you think there were any metagame differences in the Worlds in comparison to regular MPDC/SPDC tournaments?
I think top 8 of worlds represents pretty much all archetypes, which were played during this season. GW aura was something new, but it was much easier match for me after all mills and gwyned’s tokens.

Do you belong to Standard Pauper Players clan? What benefits do you feel from being in the clan?
Yes I do. I can see if some of players are online (if not a buddy) and can ask for a test game.

What led you to join the clan?
Adner led me to join the clan;=)
MTGO is not the best instrument for clans and groups imo. It is not a MMO, where ppl MUST play in group to achieve success. So it doesn’t feel really different being a clan member or not. Sadly.

Is there anything intriguing you in Khans? What deck will you play first after KTK release?
I don’t know yet what to play in STD pauper, but I usually start a season with aggro. So RDW probably. I think BG pack-GY-with-creatures-get-a-big-guy-out decks will be around.

What cards are you sad to see leaving post-rotation?
Centaur Healer, Cloudfin Raptor, extort cards.

Do you have any tips for a new Standard Pauper player trying to Top 8 his first tournament?
You must pretest a deck you are going to play. I faced some guys trying to play my deck, BW Enchants Control or Mill without really knowing what to do in which situation. They played wrong or slow. Testing is very important.

Anything else I forgot to mention?
I would like to shout out to gwyned for letting us play MPDC, joekewwl, DrChrisBaker for SPDC, Adner, beatnikbobby (go, bobby, go!), Malum (pity he doesn’t play), Chip (he doesn’t play either), Mundisv, rremedio1, BigBee and the rest of the guys who make together a small, but cool STD pauper community!

An interview with MPDC 26.06 winner Forli!

Hello guys! I'm sorry for delaying this one, but it is finally here! I hope we can make these winner interviews a tradition.

Hello and congratulations on you win, Forli! Could you please introduce yourself?
I’m Forli on mtgo, I’m 24 years old and live in Spain.

What is your identity as a wizard?(Colors and archetypes you prefer, favourite cards and formats)
I don’t really like one color or archetype more than the others, however I do prefer really grindy games that are won with a lot of small advantadges, so I really like standard pauper.

How did you start playing Magic? MTGO? Standard Pauper?
I had been playing similar online games for some time, so I decided to try magic as well, I discovered standard pauper and PRE when looking for a way to not expend too much money.

What led you to playing the deck you won with?
The W/x auras decks were already some of the most powerful decks in the format before m15, and then they got heliod’s pilgrim, Wb is probably the best version thanks to the  “combo” of auramancer and font of return. Until the rotation I think this is clearly the best deck.

Would you play that deck again in a tournament?
Yes, like  I said it’s really good.

Could you explain some of the more interesting choices in your decklist?
Sadly this is a deck that pretty much builds itself, I tried to test some interesting cards but nothing seemed to be as powerful as the basic version.

A short recap of the tournament?
R1 - BigBee with monowhite auras:
Game 1 I made a huge mistake looking for a plains instead of a swamp with evolving wilds(I was tired after running home)  and got 3 of  my 4 black cards stuck on my hand, luckily in games 2 and 3 I drew very well.

R2 – Kriss with dimir mill:
Game 1 I mulligan to 5, but his deck was like on removal and thanks to heliod’s pilgrim I managed to get enough threats, game 2 he tried to kill me fast with several mind sculpts but I killed him faster.

R3 - Hero1141 with UW tempo:
This was a cool deck with cards like azorius arrester and frost lynx that are good at slowing down auras decks. Game 1 I mistakenly believe I was ahead and he holds down my creatures long enough to kill me, games 2 and 3 I try to be more careful and I manage to win.

T8 – Godzo with Bw auras:
Game 1 I keep a slow hand and he kills me really fast( I lost a lot of game ones this tournament), games 2 and 3 are more like the mirror match usually plays, I get enough removal for all his creatures with auras but he can’t remove all of mine so I win.

T4 – rremedio with a 6 or 7 colors control deck:
2 long games where a lot of my creatures get killed, eventually I manage to play more threats than he has answers (I really liked stab wound here).

Final – ByeBye with RDW:
Pacifism ended up being the winning card here, I played 3 on game 1 and all 4 on game 2.

What do you consider to be the best archetypes at the moment?
The variants of white auras and the decks that can beat white auras.

What is your strategy against these top decks?
In the mirror it all depends on how much removal and ethereal armors you get to cast, but when I can choose I prefer to be the one removing creatures with armor. Against decks with lots of removal I usually wait to cast armor until I see a chance.

Is there anything intriguing you in Khans? What deck will you play first after KTK release?
As I wild guess I think black devotion will be the best deck at the start,  also  the delve cards seem really strong.

What cards are you sad to see leaving post-rotation?
Mostly celestial flare, that card was usually involved in the most interesting situations in the format. Also the gatekeepers.

Thank you for your time, Forli! I hope I get a chance to interview you again, and best of luck in the future!
